LAMMA 2022: Hoofcount & JF Hudson

The countdown to LAMMA show is underway. With a bigger stand than ever, this year we will be joined by friends from across the Pennines. Hoofcount, the Lancashire based hoof health specialists will be with us at the NEC in January.

It is not the first time we have paired up. We helped design and build two protypes of the Hoofcount Transit. The Transit is designed especially for dry cows and young stock. Using our CAD n Cut bespoke engineering service, we worked together last year on the outer palour feeder station system which also monitors other aspects of the individual cows’ health, such as hoof health and weight. This sees that cows go into the herd in as good as condition as possible.

I used SolidWorks, solid modelling computer-aided design (CAD) software, to create the 3D design. This is where SolidWorks comes into its own. It gives the ability to draw something, whatever it might be, and send video and drawings of the design onto a customer. It allows you to rotate the drawing to look at it from all angles, so before you have even cut any steel you have chance to know if you are on the right or wrong lines. A customer can then say “yes, no, please try this, alter this etc.”, and you haven’t cut any steel. It means we can be as efficient as possible with materials.

I really enjoyed working with such a progressive, forward-thinking company. From my time working on and with dairy farms, I can say that Hoofcounts’ footbaths do exactly what they need to do. They are no hassle and straight-forward to use. Farmers cannot speak highly enough of them.

Hoofcount is the UK as the market leader in dairy footbaths and faring well overseas too. The range is now being exported to many countries across the world including Germany, Sweden and the Czech Republic.

Anthony Marsh, Dairy Engineer and Founder of Hoofcount Ltd, has recently returned from Canada where the company’s products are also used. Anthony says, “Working with JF Hudson’s CAD n Cut service made our design through to fabrication process as seamless as possible when we had a new idea. From discussing ideas to drawing out different designs followed up with assistance in the fabrication and assembly of prototypes James offered a fresh and yet professional approach when we designed our new Transit footbath system.”

2021 has been some year for Hoofcount; Director and Dairy Engineer, Anthony Marsh was shortlisted for the British Farming Awards 2021, Agri Innovator of the Year. The company also won Micro Business of the Year at the BIBAs 2021.

There is still plenty to plan and get ready for the show, but we are looking forward to a great return to LAMMA which will celebrate its 40th anniversary at the NEC Birmingham on 11-12 January. Come and say hello to us and the Hoofcount team
